Fyasko Welcomes a New Explorer

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

.

Fyasko is hyped to welcome a new Explorer to the team! Meet Benjamin Douglas Classen.

Born 3/23/1982 in Saint Charles Illinois, lived there until ages 6 then “went gypsy” and has moved 28 times since!

A man of many talents: a former barista, he has worked framing houses, on cars, as an interior design, a landscape architect, in a surf shop, private label design and the former digital marketing manager at Skullcandy.

Has a Theoretical Physics and Philosophy degree for University Colorado Boulder.

Today his portfolio of work includes: columnist for karmaloop.com, photographer, graphic designer, web designer, marketing consultant, web analytics, design concept consultant, aesthetic architect and now a Fyasko Explorer!

Sorry gals, he is the self proclaimed winner of the woman’s lottery – in just 3 short weeks he is going to marry the woman of his dreams!

.

Went to middle school in San Juan, CA and would always get his ass kicked by the San Juan Crips!! So in high school at Capo Valley, where he played football, he picked up Brazilian jui jitsu. Since then he has only been in one fight! He now trains at the Guillobel Academy in San Clemente.

Although he is a Lost Winds local (where he recently proposed to his fiancé) at heart you can find him surfing anything shorter then a 6’ at salt creek, his new homebreak table rock and stealth missions to the Ranch.

During his 5 colleges years at the University of Colorado he picked up snowboarding and from his surfing background, was able to transition into a sponsorship in just 2 short years. That is where he found his love of the camera. Instead of riding, he was more interested in shooting his fellow riders and surrounding scenery. (Ben’s first camera beside Quicksnaps was an Olympus E3, his current camera is an A77 and his fav camera is an 1981 cannon AE1).

We asked Ben, “Why Fyasko?” He stated. “I choose to work with Fyasko because they are a Brand that is built around a central core idea of expression through collectiveness. They have their own sense of identity that it is expressed in the garments they design. I feel that they are not looking to fill a niche, they are not asking what’s cool and then designing from there, they just make stuff that they say is cool and then they live by that…..”

This interview happened just hours from Ben stepping down from his post at Skullycandy, Ben soundly looks at me and closes with this famous quote by Corrie Ten Boom “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God”.

Ben is a guy with a ton of talent, life experience, travel, and grit. Fyasko is proud to announce him to our growing list of Explorers, whom through their cultured eyes and captured images, will open your imagination to get off your ass and go explore this great planet…..

I.T.S. Music Playground / Good Listener’s Album Release Party

Monday, January 16th, 2012

This past weekend I.T.S. Music Playground hosted Good Listener’s album release party at 1980 Gallery in Costa Mesa, CA. I was invited by my good friend Steven Kerns (who’s birthday was also being celebrated) to come by to do some live painting for the show. Beat dropping live performances went down by DJ’s TerribleFolly, Cloud Life, Yes Mistress, GKEN-E, Alphabets, ThirdRock, Smurko, Myrcene and Good Listener. Installation art was set up all around with sweet neon flowers and black lights by Burning Man artist Dana Troy. Overall great night of art and music… always a good time with the ITS family, here are  a few flicks from the night.

I WAS HERE.

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

This has been in my head for years. What is it about? WET CEMENT and a person having to leave his mark. Now it’s not a graffiti thing, it’s way more. I think that people have this really instinctive feeling that comes from way back. I’m talking like cave man instinct to say “I WAS HERE”.

I feel that when a person writes their name, or proclaims love to another person, or just draws something silly, or something that depicts what’s going on during the time they wrote it, that person knows that signature will be there in that cement a lot longer than they will be around. This sort of goes back to the early cavemen drawing, the Mayans calendar, or Egyptians tombs. They left us marks or notes or stories of how they lived or what they did or who they loved or how to lived in the next life.

What I’m getting at is, we as people who live in the 20th century behave just as they did in the past. We feel we need to let people know that we were there at a certain place and time, though writing in stone, the same way our ancestors did. I know we have modern technology and we can leave a record in other ways, but this is something that is done in the subconscious.

Well, walking around the streets of NYC, I’ve noticed this shit all over the city and some of these sidewalk signatures have been here as long as I’ve been on this earth – that’s 41 years. I’ve only done two weeks of searching, so I didn’t get all the dates I wanted, but enough to make my point.

Enjoy.

Let’s start this off with 1970, the year I was born.

Blackbook Session 11

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

This past Saturday Fyasko headed up to the EXPO Art Center in Long Beach for Blackbook Session 11. The day was filled with live art, music, workshops and giveaways from sponsors such as Stussy, Famous Stars and Straps, The Wild Ones plus many more. An art contest for different category ages was held where 1st place winners in the 18 -25 age group were eligible for scholarship grants and major prizes by sponsors. DJ Rated R kept it live with the music rolling while the Hawg City Smokers BBQ’ed up some mean burgers and hotdogs. Overall the event was a success with a ton of art and talented youngsters.
