Dennis Hopper’s first major retrospective in America, Double Standard, opened at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA today. It’s an extremely likable show with a likable installation by curator Julian Schnabel.
I’m not trying to be snide or damn with faint praise. By likable I mean just that—this show is easy to like. It presents a sympathetic portrait of an intriguing artist and demimonde character who’s experimented with abstract expressionism, photography, assemblage, pop, graffiti and film with great dexterity. His photos of the art world in the 1960s alone are worth the price of admission.
