Billabong Agrees to Buy RVCA

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

WWD AND FYASKO REPORT:

SYDNEY–Billabong International Limited said Monday that it has reached a “conditional agreement” to buy California.-based skate and lifestyle brand RVCA for an undisclosed amount.

“RVCA is not defined by any single sport or culture. It represents a community of culturally aware youth and is inspired by a diverse range of interests, each of which is underpinned by an original, highly creative design element,” Billabong International Limited chief executive officer Derek O’Neill said.

“It is a brand that has developed a very strong presence in the United States, particularly in southern California, on the strength of its fashion-forward ranges in categories including art-driven t-shirts, denim, wovens, boardshorts and, more recently, its girls’ line,” the executive said.

The acquisition includes the current management team, headed up by RVCA founder Pat Tenore, who established the brand in 2000.

Double Standard by Dennis Hopper – Geffen Contemporary at MOCA

Double Standard at MOCA

Double Standard at MOCA

Double Standard at Moca

Dennis Hopper’s first major retrospective in America, Double Standard, opened at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA today. It’s an extremely likable show with a likable installation by curator Julian Schnabel.

I’m not trying to be snide or damn with faint praise. By likable I mean just that—this show is easy to like. It presents a sympathetic portrait of an intriguing artist and demimonde character who’s experimented with abstract expressionism, photography, assemblage, pop, graffiti and film with great dexterity. His photos of the art world in the 1960s alone are worth the price of admission.

Old Style Guitar Shop

Old Style Guitar Shop

For those about to rock, Fyasko salute you.

Also, we want to help you out with that. So allow us to point you toward a killer new place to pick up a custom guitar—and maybe catch a secret concert out back. It’s called Old Style Guitar Shop, and it’s now open.

Basically, this is the covert little place to find a handcrafted number that already looks like it’s been beat up. Proprietor/luthier Reuben Cox isn’t afraid to source random furniture off the street and use the wood, which equates to instant indie cred. Just ask Sufjan Stevens, the National and Arcade Fire, who’ll be playing his guitars next time they’re on stage.

But if your band’s on hiatus at the moment, you’ll probably still want to get on the shop’s mailing list to hear about their secret shows. Not too long ago, the National stopped into the alley out back (between sold-out Wiltern gigs) to grab the instruments Cox had lying around and jam for about 50 people, max. And last week, Cox roasted a leg of lamb and hauled out a piano for USC grad Matthew Oden to play all 30 Goldberg Variations.

It was in the key of rock.
