The Colony

The Colony

If you were in New York, it would be time to start thinking about your Hamptons weekends right now.

You’re not.

So it’s about time to start thinking about your Hamptons weekends… in Hollywood.

Introducing Cahuenga’s hottest new Hamptons-themed nightclub—The Colony brought the nautical vibe and the alcoholic popsicles.

Finally, you’ve got a sprawling den of indoor-outdoor debauchery from SBE (Mi-6, Industry) that feels somehow Kennedy-approved and Montauk-adjacent. From the wooden-plank entrance outside that looks like a lifeguard stand, you’ll enter into a blue-and-white deck with a hammock-covered pool and cabana-style seating.

That’s where you and your friends will want to start things off… with some alcoholic sushi. (Think Jell-O shot instead of tuna and rice paper instead of seaweed.) They’ve also got booze-filled popsicles, champagne-sorbet foams on mini-spoons—and olives skewered on pipettes filled with splashes of martini.

Now that you’ve had a healthy dinner, you’re ready for the open-air dance floor—it’s surrounded by wave-covered walls, tiers of tables with secret storage under the seat cushions and, by the back bar, a suspended turquoise kayak (the top has cushions, so it’s like a bench/swing).

And if anybody in your group needs to ditch her stilettos for some flip-flops, there’s a beachy retail kiosk on site—yes, in the middle of the club—with some VIP storage lockers at the ready.

2010 BET Awards

Chris Brown

El DeBarge

Kanye West

The 2010 BET Awards Show was definitely a night of second chances for a number of entertainers, most notably 1980s R&B icon El DeBarge and rap vet Kanye West.

El DeBarge, a singer known for his musical family DeBarge and their 1980s signature tunes “Rhythm of The Night,” performed the classic song and a tune from his first album in 16 years, aptly named “Second Chance.” The 49-year-old singer said on the awards show that he chose the title because he believes “everybody deserves a second chance.”

The statement rang true throughout the two-hour awards show as male entertainers with controversial turns in the spotlight in 2009 made comebacks for the Sunday night BET gala in Los Angeles.

Kanye West reemerged from hiding for a “mountain-climbing” performance of his tune “Power.” His opening performance on Sunday night marked the rapper’s first major awards show appearance since his infamous Taylor Swift interruption at the MTV Music Awards last fall.

Chris Brown also took stage for his own emotionally charged “second chance.” The 21-year-old R&B entertainer, who last year pleaded guilty to one count of felony assault on pop singer Rihanna, tearfully broke down during his tribute to late pop icon Michael Jackson while performing “Man In The Mirror.” He cried on stage during a majority of the song. Fyasko took the struggling Popstars tears as a inability to dance an MJ set and pull through vocally after being winded. I hope the majority of viewers didn’t take Chris Browns ability to “ACT” humble and apologetic seriously.

With these three performers each taking emotional turns on the stage. The 2010 BET Awards proved to be a powerful and dramatic draw.

Xoia

Before you drop into El Prado for a beer, you can now fuel up at an intriguing new Vietnamese restaurant next door. They’ve got standards like pho and banh mi, but the owner is a Mexico-born artist, so you’ll also find cross-continental offerings like Pho Beef Tacos.

Vidiots Annex Launches Film Studies

Vidiots Annex

Summer school should be an oxymoron. Or at the very least, a Vidiot.

Come July, the venerable indie video store kicks off its film studies program where cinephiles gather inside the bright new annex for two-hour classes taught by industry pros, historians, and critics. Think of it as film school — minus the debt and homework.

Sink into a love seat to delve into the anatomy of cult films or discuss censorship controversies throughout Hollywood history. Anime geeks probe the mythology of superheroes and giant robots. Comedy lovers learn the genre from the silent era through today’s talkies. Instructors provide a recommended viewing list, but don’t sweat it if you can’t watch everything beforehand. Clips are shown in class.

Registration is open now for the full four-, five-, or six-week series ($128-$192) and individual classes ($40). If you really want to feel smart, join the Saturday night film club and catch a flick with like-minded movie enthusiasts, followed by stimulating discussion gratis.

Lifeguard Tower Art

Lifeguard Tower Art

As you learned on Baywatch (and last weekend), our sandy shores are overstuffed with breathtaking works of art.

And you may not have thought it possible, but things on the beach are about to get even more… artistic.

Feast your eyes upon The Lifeguard Tower Project, set to dominate more than 30 miles of LA beach this summer.

Basically, every lifeguard tower for miles in either direction—from north of Malibu to south of Hermosa—is about to get an extreme makeover of patterns and colors so bright you’ll see them from your next flight out of LAX. (They’re doing the roofs too.)

This is courtesy to the civic-minded bunch at Portraits of Hope, the same group that brightened whole fleets of NYC taxis not so long ago.

In addition to giving you something noble to discuss with your favorite lifeguard in residence (the artists are kids and volunteers), this project finally grants you the long-awaited opportunity to go to the museum… by going to the beach.

FIFA World Cup for Design Inspiration

World Cup Inspired Soccer Ball

World Cup Inspired Socks

World Cup Inspired Back-pack

The FIFA World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world (about 715 million people tuned in 2006). In South Africa, matches began on June 11, where 32 teams are vying for the coveted trophy — and its custom Louis Vuitton case. Fyasko is wondering will the FIFA World Cup become the leading inspiration amongst designers in upcoming seasons?

Fig Hot Dog

Listen, today Fyasko is  just going to throw out some important key words.

Pool. Sun. Gin-spiked lemonade. And… hot dogs.

Introducing The FIG Hot Dog Cart, now poolside at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel, just steps from the ocean.

You already know all about the hotel’s acclaimed restaurant, FIG, and that’s great. Really. But when you want to fuel up before the beach this weekend, you need something a little less… restaurant-y.
